ROLF HOOK REVERENCES
ROLF HOOK REVERENCES
Rolf Hook has for some years been one of the country's distinguished artists. His pieces have a distinctive signature: they combine excellent craftsmanship with unique design. His work demonstrates an originality I am unaccustomed to seeing as a selector.
In 1985 he was awarded the "Advancement Prize" and in 1989 the "State Prize" of the Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
It was already clear in 1985 that we were dealing with an independent and uncommon artist who manipulates and fills the medium of wood with new ideas and forms; one that shapes unique and exceptional objects that give the observer rare insight into the heart of the material.
His quiet and reserved manner soon wins people over. His unconventional perception combines with a radical approach to his chosen medium to create a new language of form and tradition.

Rolf is an experienced master of a fine art style with a predominant leaning to the naturalness of the material. His work tends toward the minimalist, creating extremely intensive shapes and expressions, giving his objects a very specific finish which enriches them with such a high degree of sensuality that the onlooker feels compelled to reach out and touch the object. He acts in a virtuoso manner in the design, form and craft of his unique objects in wood.
He imbues all his work with a special combination of spirit, feeling and crafting hands. His masterly skill and artistic insights make his work outstandingly unique and internationally sought after by collectors, parks and international companies, as well as private collectors.
Dr. Franz-Xaver Schlegel
Art Historian
Rolf Hook has faithfully maintained the skills and traditions acquired from his father at an early age and by extended training and study. He blends his well-founded knowledge with supreme skill. His artistic strength is in his freedom of expression and is not harnessed to one particular form.
His intuition guides each individually created work of art. All his pieces have a captivating beauty, sometimes expressing humor, sometimes disclosing an intriguing story.
As a selector and member of the jury for the State Award in 1989 I am able to state that Mr Rolf Hook received the unanimous vote and fully deserved this award, as well as others equally prestigious, that he has received before.
